OpenAI just launched ChatGPT as a sidebar tool inside Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. You type in plain English. It builds the formula, cleans the data, or runs the analysis. You stay in the spreadsheet. That is the product. I have been waiting for something like this for a while. I tested the add-on this week. The honest verdict: the idea is right, the execution is not there yet. What just launched The feature runs as a sidebar inside both Excel and Google Sheets. You describe what you want in plain English, and ChatGPT either drafts the formula, writes the code to restructure your data, summarises a tab, or explains why your model changed when you updated an assumption. The idea is not new. Tools like SheetAI, GPT for Sheets, and various Excel add-ins have been doing versions of this for over a year. What is new is that OpenAI is now doing it natively, globally, and inside the tools where most business users already spend their day. That distinction matters.
